made one by one these crayons are made with a mixture of waxes. The main ingredient (around 98%) is our South Island beeswax which is blended with a small amount of carnauba tree wax, raw cacao butter and specially formulated high pigment food dye. All ingredients are non-toxic, food-safe and sustainable.

Inspired by the block crayons at the children's Steiner playgroup made wanting to create something that's made from NZ beeswax and that would be a classic.

These are easy to draw with, and also add another layer of fun to play since they can be stacked, lined up domino style, the opportunities are endless when things are simpler in shape.

They can be used to create a range of marks, either used flat against the page on the slimmer sides or on an angle on the more pointed accurate edges and corners.

Keep your crayons safe from the sun and all together in a Poppy + Sage little handmade crayon wraps or a cotton bag. Perfect for taking on holidays, adventures, the car or just for safe-keeping.

15g | W 3cm x H 4cm

Some crayons look a lot darker on-screen than they do on paper. See the colour guide above for reference.

If your crayons arrive with a whitish hue or layer over them please don’t worry, this is called ‘bloom’ and it is an indication of the purity of the beeswax. It will come off with a gentle buff.

Each piece is carefully handmade at home from start to finish, so slight variations in colour, shape, and size are part of what makes every item truly one of a kind.

Poppy + Sage believe in producing small, hand-made batches of high-quality items. They use good, kind materials that are gentle on the earth.

Cheap and easy to obtain, paraffin wax candles and petroleum-based crayons rule the roost in the consumer world. But sadly although a lot cheaper to buy these come at a price. Byproducts of quite a few nasties such as coal, shale oil, crude oil, and other chemical compounds. Not things we want to burn in our homes or let our kids play with or nibble on at the kitchen table.

Beeswax is better for us, but harder to make and it takes 3-4kgs of honey to make 1kg of beeswax so no wonder it’s more expensive to get hold of and make things with. They call it liquid gold for a reason!
